Songbird Season

How Fast They Grow!!

A successful “baby bird” season is slowing down as the seasonal cycles proceed.  This year, The Wildlife Center was challenged once again with orphaned birds of all species being rescued and brought to us.

Learning is a constant activity at the Center and as we learn more and more about the natural history of the many species that we see, we learn more and more about how to better care for them during rehabilitation and how to prepare them for their lives in “the wild” as adults.

Among the species that we received this season have been numerous Blue Jays, Common Grackles, and Northern Mockingbirds. Less common, but no less interesting were a number of Downy Woodpeckers, Red Bellied Woodpeckers, Flycatchers, Loggerhead Shrikes, Brown Thrasher and Crows.  Each of these species has a different requirement for housing and – especially – diet.  The diets vary from seed to insects to “meat” (worms, crickets, and even – in the case of the shrike, very small mammals).  Some of them even like fruit. Getting the diets right allows these little ones to grow and develop normally and to “teach” their foraging habits.
